He stood near the Slytherin stands, just outside of the team’s locker rooms and broom shed. He swallowed, looking up at the darkening sky. Just as he was about to straddle his Firbolt, and kick off for the fiery horizon, he thought he’d heard a mewling just near…
Out of curiosity, Draco dragged his broom over toward the sound. He stopped just short of entering the area because he caught sight of two glittering orbs shining in the darkness. A rather mighty meow emanated from the bowels of the Slytherin stands and then Draco caught sight of the outrageously long-furred animal.
When people spoke of pets looking like their owners, they certainly weren’t joking in this case. There was no doubt in his mind that the bushy-tailed, harrassed-looking cat in question belonged to no other witch than Granger.
“Well, Crookshanks, my fine fellow,” Draco said in amused greeting. “What a pleasure to finally meet the likes of you.”
Exactly what he needed, another Slytherin. Crookshanks narrowed his eyes in warning and meowed slowly, getting ready to run if he had to. Fellow his tail, he thought.
Draco knew that look, his mother’s cats had that look … suspicious. He didn’t blame his mother’s felines for their wariness, after all he’d often pulled at their tails and roughhoused with them when he was a tyke. But this cat…
Merlin if it didn’t look as predictably cautious as Granger by the mere sound of Draco’s breathing.
“Hungry, maybe?” Draco suggests, leaning a shoulder against the broom shed as if he was having a conversation with Zabini or Nott.
The cat didn’t move for a moment, thinking of the possibilities. Hungry? Yes, he was hungry, very to be honest, but he didn’t trust the boy. After all, his owner didn’t trust him at all. Crookshanks sat down on the ground, wagging his tail. Maybe… just maybe, he could give him the benefit of doubt.
